Musical theatre performance “Nikos Xylouris, the Archangel of Crete” – Chania 10th and 11th July

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Greek singer and master of the Cretan lyra, the musical theatre performance “Nikos Xylouris, the Archangel of Crete” will be performed in Chania.
Nikos Xylouris was born in the mountainous village of Anogeia, and his powerful, soulful voice and traditional melodies became a defining symbol of Cretan culture and the Greek resistance.

WHEN: 10th and 11th July at 21.00
WHERE: East Moat Theatre, Chania
Tickets: www.more.com

It is the first time that the life and work of this great Greek, Nikos Xylouris, is presented on stage in a high-profile production with a large troupe and the participation of important theater and music artists.
Thus, the “Archangel of Crete” as he was called, comes to life on stage in a performance with live music, unpublished photographic material, precious audio documents and narration. It is an experiential experience that unites testimony, art and emotion.

The work attempts to introduce the figure of Xylouris not only as a voice-symbol, but as the inner universe of a man who sang with the soul of a people .

Viewers have the opportunity to enjoy Xylouris’ iconic songs in new orchestrations by Andreas Katsigiannis , while the Cretan program of the performance is musically curated by RossDaly !

Ourania Xylouri , Nikos’ life partner and custodian of his memory, has contributed substantially to the final shaping of the text. Guided by her narratives and centered on songs that marked an entire era, the performance not only captures the greatness of his voice, but also reveals – above all – the moral and spiritual weight of a personality who left a mark on modern Greek culture .

Lydia

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
