Vaccinations: AZ paused for <60's, platform opens for 18-24 year olds
Young people aged 18-24 will be able to book their covid-19 vaccinations from Wednesday 16th June, announced the Greek health authorities this week.
All information about vaccination eligibility & booking is on the government platform emvolio.gov.gr, or can be obtained via registering for paperless prescriptions, or by consultation with local pharmacies or KEPs.
The 18-24 age group will have access to the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and also to the single-dose Johnson & Johnson shot. They will not be offered the AstraZeneca vaccines.
The Vaccination Committee this week recommended that the AstraZeneca vaccine be given only to people over the age of 60, said Maria Theodoridou, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics and Chairman of the National Vaccination Committee, during the briefing on the National Vaccination Coverage Scheme.
The committee recommends that citizens who have made an appointment for the first dose of AstraZeneca choose one of the other three available vaccines. However, those who have already had the first dose should continue with the same vaccine.
The committee takes this decision as there is a good supply of vaccines now in Greece and the epidemiology of the country generally looks good. There is a steady reduction in cases, as Mrs. Theodoridou pointed out. She also noted that vaccinations take up is continuing at a rapid pace, gradually building immunity in the general population.
