About the music:
“Éntechno-Laïkó” (έντεχνο λαϊκό), literally means “artistic folk song”. It
is a major Greek music genre that emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
It bridges the gap between high art and popular culture by combining traditional Greek folk and Rebetiko music with western classical orchestrations and poetry.
The genre was created by two outstanding Greek composers: Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis.
They wanted to elevate the urban folk music (Laïkó), which was previously dismissed by high society, and make it respectable for educated audiences.
They replaced simple pop lyrics with the works of Nobel Prize-winning Greek poets like Giorgos Seferis, Odysseas Elytis, and Yannis Ritsos.
