Cargo ship grounded in Kissamos

The ship “Manassa Rose M” drifted aground on Drapanias beach in Kissamos in the morning of tuesday 25. January. The ship tried to anchor in heavy wind and 5 meter high waves but failed to do so, grounded and broke in two.
She was on its way from Turkey to Misrata, Libya loaded with heavy construction machinery.
All 10 crewmembers were rescued, 8 of them entered a liferaft and two jumped into the sea.
They were all taken care of by the Hellenic Coast Guard and locals.
Some of the deck cargo drifted ashore, two big tanks for cement and gypsum.  On Wednesday, the locals worked to salvage these onto the beach.
No pollution has yet been seen on the beach but there is a smell of oil.
Today, thursday 27th, oil booms are put out to prevent any leaking oil to reach the beach.
