According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection there is still a very high fire risk – risk category 4.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has informed the relevant officials, as well as the Regions and the Municipalities, in order to be on increased civil protection readiness, in order to immediately deal with any episodes of fires.

CITIZENS are advised to be especially careful and to avoid any actions that can cause fire by negligence, e.g. :

-Burning dry grass, twigs or rubbish

-Using machines that cause sparks, such as circular saws, welding machines

-Using  outdoor grills ( i.e for BBQs)

-Throwing away cigarette ends in open spaces, etc.

REMINDER: burning in fields is prohibited during the fire season.

In case of fire, citizens are asked to immediately inform the Fire Department – call 199.

I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family,children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute.
