Final cleanup of Sfouggares Beach on Sunday 29th September

It was a hot Sunday morning when a group of committed people met for a final joint effort at Sfouggares Beach at 11.00 – members of the Green Team DEDISA, the team Kαθαρέσ Παραλίες – Clean Beaches in Kissamos and local people.

The rubbish collected last year at this beach, accessible only with difficulty, had to be put into new bags as the old ones had broken down, and the hardest bit: 100 huge bags had to be carried up the steep hill. And, of course, the ‘new’ rubbish washed ashore was collected.
The men then  – including two extraordinarily strong ones who we had hired –   lined up from the bottom of the beach to the top and passed on the immensely heavy bags.

At least our work was not in vain – the next winter storms would have taken the rubbish out into the sea again.
Two days before the clean up we talked to the Vice Mayor in Kolymbari who agreed to have the  rubbish bags removed by Municipality workers at the beginning of the following week. They did, but only removed those bags at the top of the hill by the road side but left the others a bit further down the hill.
Anyway, the Afrata cleanup has eventually come to an almost successful end – after one year! As for the rest, we are about to sort it out.
A big thank you to all the  volunteers!

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And six years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
