Film “Filantropica” (“Here is the Balkans”) – Chania 10th February

The Cultural Association “THE FRIENDS OF LETTERS AND ARTS”, completing the highly successful series of  “Here is the Balkans” films,  invites you to the Romanian film “Filantropica” directed by Nae Caranfil (2002). This dark comedy is an adaptation of a novel by Marin Preda.

WHEN: 10th February 20.00
WHERE: Cultural Centre, Andrea Papandreou 70, Chania
Free entrance.

About the film:
A sarcastic and ironic approach to one of Romania’s social problems. One of the worst problems in this Balkan country is that of the beggars.
A professor of philology at a high school finds himself entangled in his love affairs. When faced with the financial demands of a relationship he finds an unexpected way to earn easy money.

The film is an excellent commentary on societies in crisis: there are only princes and beggars (and there are only stray dogs in between).

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
