A cleaner Kissamos

River Cleaning

A big group of residents in West Crete gathered in Kissamos on Sunday morning to clean the local river and act for a cleaner environment.

The event saw the participation of 26 people of all ages. Various teams went litter-picking along and inside the main river in Kissamos, its estuary and the beach surrounding the river mouth, between Mavros Molos beach and Kissamos town centre. About 20 big bags of rubbish were collected.

The river, that runs through Pyrgos and the Western side of Kissamos town, is the main water system in this area. It discharges everything it collects along the way into Mavros Molos beach, the most popular in Kastelli, where most local families with children and plenty of tourists bathe in the summer. Fresh water bodies like rivers are also extremely important ecosystems, thriving with all forms of life, and they are important indicators of the general health of the environment.
