First turtle nest in Kissamos

Yesterday a turtle nest was reported on Kissamos beach, in the Korfalonas area. This is already the 5th turtle track spotted in the last few days. The turtles in Kissamos bay have been quite active!

Last summer, about a dozen nests were spotted throughout the season. Kissamos bay is not surveyed systematically and not officially protected, but this does not discourage turtles from coming anyway! Many local residents are interested in sea turtles, and the tracks are easy to spot for those who like morning walks on the beach.

The area where the nest was spotted is also covered in vehicle tracks, presenting a very high risk for the development of turtle eggs and their hatchlings.

Let’s hope it will be a successful season for these ancient animals.
