This 63-minute historical documentary explores the profound impact of the legendary composer Mikis Theodorakis, his leadership of the Lambrakis Democratic Youth (a pivotal political and cultural youth movement in 1960s Greece), and their collective struggle for peace and democracy.
The film unfolds a moving, lesser-known story that connects the legendary composer Mikis Theodorakis, the political struggles of the Lambrakis Democratic Youth, and a specific family from Chania:
-The Historical Context (1963–1964): Following the assassination of MP Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963, the Lambrakis Youth movement was founded with Mikis Theodorakis as its president. During the Second Marathon Peace March in 1964, Mikis led the Cretan delegation.

-The Wedding in Chania: At the end of that historic march, Theodorakis acted as the best man for a young couple of activists from Chania, Crete.
-The Birth and Baptism of “Irene” (1965):
The following year, during the Third Peace March, the couple returned carrying their newborn daughter. Mikis Theodorakis became the child’s godfather, naming her Irene (the Greek word for Peace) to seal their shared ideals and struggles.

Through rare archival footage, the documentary captures the political pulse of the 1960s and highlights the deep, lifelong bonds between the great composer and his ancestral homeland of Chania—where he is now buried, in the village of Galatas.

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
