50 years Cultural Centre Chania – exhibitions – until 30th September
In May 1976 the “Establishment of the Cultural Center of Chania” was published in the Government Gazette ( 320/76,12th May 1976).
This year marks 50 years since then. With the brothers Polychronis and Charidimos Polychronidis as the initiators and with the assistance of many other citizens, as well as local and central authorities, the work of creating the Center was put into operation, constituting to this day one of the main points of reference for culture and education in the city of Chania, hosting a wide variety of activities for the citizens of our country, young and old.
The 50-year milestone will be celebrated with events that will take place during 2026.
Three exhibitions are already operating at the premises of the Cultural Centre, Andrea Papandreou 72,which can be visited between 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m., except on official holidays.
Free admission.
The exhibitions include:
1. the History of the Creation of the Center, under the title “People and the Work”, as well as material from its first productions. The newspaper “Chaniotika Nea” participates, through its archive.
2. Exhibition of rare book editions – such as the 1st edition or a signed edition by the author or a unique copy – that mark our intellectual heritage, under the gaze of the figures of great creators of the Spirit. In addition to private individuals, the Municipal Library of Chania and the Lyceum of Greek Women / Chania Branch also participate in this exhibition with rare publications.
3. Exhibition entitled “The Covers”, designed book covers, visual works, by the painter Yannis Valavanidis. The exhibition of covers was presented for the first time at the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank from June to September 2015 under the title “The Art of the Cover”. The exhibition material was provided by Art Historian Martha – Elli Christofoglou.
