About the exhibition
A special visual portrait of the art of our country is made up of the 99 works of art in the exhibition “Journeys in Art. Works from the Collection of the Bank of Greece”, inaugurated by the Governor of the Bank of Greece, Yiannis Stournaras and curated by Haris Kanellopoulou, art historian, scientific manager and curator of the Collection of Works of Art of the Bank of Greece.

The works, which capture the timeless evolution of modern Greek art, function as testimonies of places and times. This multidimensional set of artworks, covering the period 1870-2024 and signed by historically emblematic creators, as well as by younger, established and contemporary emerging artists, offers visitors a representative image of the Bank of Greece collection – one of the most recognized collections of Greek art – through different and interesting aspects of visual expression.

The exhibition is organized into three routes-sections, developed on the corresponding floors of the Art Gallery of the Municipality of Chania, with creations that cover a period of approximately 150 years and offer various readings of the History of Art in particular, but also of History in general.

• The first section covers the period from the painting of the Munich School and the last quarter of the 19th century to seascapes and its parallel subcategories up to the mid-20th century.

• The second section, beginning in the 1920s and the influential new representations of Greek modernist painters, culminates in the artistic pursuits of pioneering visual artists who began their activity in the 1960s and 1970s.

• The third section begins in the 1970s and the representational management of landscape and the human form, and reaches the canvas of modern abstraction in the current decade.

Lydia

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
