For the third time, international research and creative workshops on design,circular economy, sustainability and folk culture are organized in Alikianos, in the Municipality of Platanias and the results of the workshops are presented at the Junior High High School.

Two cycles of the international Periplus research workshops, which approach the material culture of Crete with a different creative perspective, in combination with the circular economy and design, begin on July 20th and will end on August 7th, 2025. In the hospitable environment of Alikianos with the generous support of the Municipality of Platanias, the Region of Crete, the Botanical Garden of Crete and others.

The intensive field research workshops, with their unconventional methods, involve 53 talented students, researchers and professors of design, architecture, arts, media and crafts, selected from 42 of the most important universities around the world. Such as Royal College of Art (UK), Central Saint Martins (UK), UC Berkeley (USA), TU Delft, Goldsmiths University (UK), National University of Singapore, University of Cambridge, Pratt Institute New York, Carnegie Mellon University (USA), University of the Arts London, The University of Sydney, Yale University (USA), Cranbrook Academy of Art USA, RMIT Melbourne, Parsons School of Design New York, UCL Bartlett London, Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Politecnico di Torino, Edinburgh University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Kingston School of Art (UK), Boston University, Lasalle Singapore, Oslo Metropolitan University, National Institute of Design (India), Stanford D-School California, etc.

To seek innovative opportunities that will come from the exploitation of the circular economy and the local rural environment, combined with a groundbreaking approach to the folk culture of Crete. Aiming to propose new business and cultural perspectives through different logics and approaches to every aspect of the local society. Expanding knowledge about the possibilities of the place we live in, in relation to the important challenges we are called to face.

The workshops are organized by the non-profit organization The Periplus Project and an international network of academic partners, with the support of the Municipality of Platanias, the Region of Crete, the Botanical Garden of Crete, the Alikianos High School, as well as companies such as Agrocreta, Biochem, DEDISA Chania, Ever Crete, Falcon SA, Myloi Kritis, Manousakis Winery, Terra Creta, Cretan Brewery and others.

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family,children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
