The Archaeological Museum of Chania welcomes the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum in the context of the pop-up exhibition entitled Art Bonds: 8 eight contemporary sculptures – infinite timeless bonds, which is organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania.
The pop-up exhibition is taking place within the framework of the new action of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania entitled Ties of Art (ArTies), which unfolds in the halls of the Permanent Exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Chania with objects coming from the collections of Museums, Foundations and Cultural Institutions of national and international scope.
The aim of the action is to create an interactive dialogue between ancient objects and contemporary works, which will demonstrate the timelessness of artistic inspiration and renew the way in which we approach the treasures of our cultural heritage.
The first guest of the Art Links is the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, with eight important sculptures by contemporary, renowned Greek artists (Giannoulis Halepas, Bella Raftopoulou, Christos Kapralos, Froso Efthymiadis-Menegaki), which are not exhibited in the permanent collections of the National Gallery. These sculptures will become the narrative thread that unfolds in the Permanent Exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Chania and weaves seven thematic conversations, revealing the infinite bonds of our cultural tradition: winged Nikes, untamed hybrid beings, amorous and aging Venuses, figures that dance, mourn silently or with great intensity, haughty and wounded hoplites, burial marks as dual symbols for the finiteness of love and the inescapability of death.
A charming coexistence that provokes (invites) the visitor to personalize the experience of the silent conversation between the ancient and the modern work, as they unite the threads of human experiences and capture them in fascinating ways.
The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, in collaboration with the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, and with the support of the Region of Crete and the Municipal Port Fund of Chania.
