Exhibition “Politics and Society in the Cretan State 1898 – 1913” – Chania 16th November until 31st January 2025

The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy and the “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” National Research & Studies Foundation, with the co-organization of the Municipality of Chania, are opening the exhibition “Politics and Society in the Cretan State 1898-1913” on Saturday, November 16 at 19:00 at the Mediterranean Architecture Center (Grand Arsenal, Venetian Harbour) in Chania.
Exhibition duration: 16/11/2024 – 31/01/2025

Opening hours: Tuesday – Friday: 11:00 – 16:00, Saturday – Sunday: 12:00 – 18:00
Monday: closed

Within the framework of  the major political and military events the exhibition follows the gradual formation of the newly established state entity, through the institutions that are created. 
At the same time, it presents aspects of the rural and urban life of the period, the developments in society, the achievements in culture and education. Through the original documents and the reproductions of rare photographic material, the visitors can get a vivid sense of the historical time and the society of Crete at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

The exhibition material consists of original documents and reproductions of rare photographic material. It comes from the archives of the “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” National Foundation, the Ismenis Kriaris Collection, the photographic archives of the Benaki Museum, the National Bank Educational Foundation/Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive, the Alpha Bank Art Collection and the Library of the Hellenic Parliament.

I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike.
