About the exhibition „WITH THE WIND” 24th June – 2nd July (Saint Rocca, Splantzia, Chania)

This exhibition is dedicated to the hundreds of migrants who did not make it through. To these anonymous fellow human beings, young and old, women, men and children  who died in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. But also to those who passed and are fighting alongside us for a better life.

From the ancient colonies, to the uprooting of Smyrna, to the factories of Germany, to the political refugees, to the children of the 21st century who excel in foreignness, their  story is a story of migration, accompanied by danger,  poverty,  separation,  longing, new homelands, and often the return.

The push backs of the Greek coast guard which are state crimes, the miserable living conditions in immigration detention centers, racism and xenophobia are moments in these lives.

The works of this exhibition are assemblages of wood washed up by the sea and iron sculptures from shipwrecks. Everywhere, the human presence is dominant. The aim is to make a comment on immigration by giving life back to shipwrecked members who are full of human expectations and will to live.
Color plays an important role in this endeavor, for the sand comes off the planks and irons, the ships come alive in the sun and are filled with colorful figures singing the eternal song of life.

It is the wish of the organizers that the works contribute financially to a rescue group in the Mediterranean. Respecting the space, this cannot be done in Agios Rocco. However, the works will be available on Monday 03/07 at the building of TEE (Hellenic Technical Chamber, Regional Dept of West Crete) Nearchos 23 under the auspices of the Association of Architects.

Lydia

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
