Changes to Coronavirus Restrictions: Greece returns to “tier” system

Starting on Saturday 30th Jan at 6am, there are changes to coronavirus prevention measures in place.

Greece is now dividing regions into “red” (severe lockdown) and “yellow” (surveillance)

The ‘red’ areas are considered at increased risk, and are subject to extra measures, while ‘yellow’ ones are under surveillance, based on the epidemiological data. At both levels there are some measures that apply for the whole country.

A reminder that updated information directly from the government, about all measures can be found (in Greek) at www.covid19.gov.gr

Measures that apply everywhere:
  • Use of mask indoors and outdoors.
  • Movements are restricted and allowed only with SMS – permission form for the six specified reasons.
  • Work with the minimum possible staff (by using rotation, teleworking) in both private and public sector.
  • Online learning for Higher Education Institutions (Universities).
  • Kindergartens, Primary schools and all Special Education schools at all levels, are open.
  • Supreme Courts and Special Courts open.
  • Super League 1 & 2 and Basketball League can operate.
For yellow regions, in addition to the measures above, the following applies:

1. Curfew from 2100 to 0500
2. Gymnasio and Lykio (Middle & High schools) will reopen for in person learning.
3. Religious services are allowed to take place in places of worship for up to 25 people, with distancing measures. This limit increases to 50 people in the case of metropolitan churches.
4. More shops and services are allowed to operate: Retail, hairdressers, barbershops, beauty salons, dieticians – with the exception of exercise, personal hygiene and body care services – plus KTEO and OPAP agencies (except OPAP Play) are operational. 1 person per 25 sq.m within shops is allowed.

To visit any of the shops or services mentioned in (4) the applicable SMS is code 2 or the corresponding printed form. The consumer must keep the message sent to 13033 in order to prove the time of sending and approval of the movement. There is a time limit of 2 hours to complete shopping and commercial transactions.
In red areas, further extra measures apply.
Details of these can be seen on the Covid 19 goverment site.
At present the Chania region is classified as “yellow”.
