Clean-up Tavronitis River Delta – 8th September

On Sunday, 8th September at 10.30,  local residents of Tavronitis and members of the Clean Beaches in Kissamos Team followed the call for volunteers by iSea   (NGO  for the Preservation of the Aquatic Ecosystems) to clean up the Tavronitis River Mouth.

A series of beach cleaning activities in Western Crete  have taken place in the last few days (Rapaniana/Kolymbari, Kedrodasos/Elafonisi), organized by Anastasia Cheritou, director of the beach clean-ups and environmental education campaign “Prosfero”  which is part of the iSea programme. The clean-ups along the north coast of Crete will continue throughout September, results being used for scientific purposes.

Anastasia holds a BSc  and an MSc in Environmental Education (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and is responsible for the organisation and implementation of iSea’ s environmental education and awareness raising projects. She has also conducted more than 30 school visits and 20 workshops for students of different levels and adults on behalf of iSea, and  was also the author of the first field guide of environmental education in special education.

The Clean Beaches in Kissamos Team was handed over a beach cleaning tool kit containing reusable bags and gloves and report forms for scientific purposes.
Thanks to the iSea team, and also to the Municipality of Platanias providing a truck for the transport of the collected waste, and to all the local volunteers helping to realize this successful clean-up project!

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And nine years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
