The musical approach by Dimitris Maramis received overwhelming reviews by an enthusiastic public, wherever it was performed, either on stage or in the concert version.
In the Erotokritos Year 2019, the project is presented by the Vamos Ensemble as a new concert orchestra for this unique concert in Chania.
The talented performers Thodoris Voutsikakis (Erotokritos), Eleni Dimopoulou (Aretousa), Ioanna Forti (Paramana), Kostis Mavrogenis (Rigas), together with the Vamos Ensemble present this unique, immortal masterpiece of the Cretan Renaissance.
The Vamos Ensemble is a musical ensemble – a small symphony orchestra composed of sixteen musicians residing in Crete. They first appeared five years ago and have as a base the village of Vamos in Chania.
EROTOKRITOS constitutes a classic example of Greek Renaissance literature and is considered one as the most important works of Cretan literature. It remains a popular work to this day, largely due to the music that accompanies it when it is publicly recited. A particular type of rhyming used in the traditional Mantinades was also the one used in Erotokritos.
EROTOKRITOS was composed by Vitsentzos Kornaros in the 17th century in Crete.
The romance consists of 10.012 fifteen-syllable rhymed verses, the last twelve of which refer to the poet himself. It was written in Cretan dialect.
Its central theme is the love between Erotokritos and Aretousa. Other themes revolve around the basic theme, such as honour, friendship, bravery and courage.
