Richard Strauss was the leading classical composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras best known for his operas “Der Rosenkavalier” and “Salome”.
It was Strauss’s grandest opera, which was able to achieved box office success.
Within a few months, the piece made its way round the world – albeit without avoiding immune to harsh criticism and distortions: the flood of waltzes in the “Rosenkavalier” was criticized and until 1924, Berlin only accepted to show a “purified version” of the “inappropriate” love scenes!
In the new MET production the director Robert Carsen places the action to last years of the Habsburg Empire.
The opera is originally set in Vienna in the 1740s. Genuine historical references are merged with fictitious inventions (like the “noble custom” of the presentation of the silver rose to a fiancée, which never actually existed) and anachronisms (like the Viennese Waltz, which did not yet exist at that time). It’s a mixture that creates a seductive mythical landscape, a ceremonious and impossibly beautiful Vienna-that-never-was.
