Master Plan for cultural and sustainable development of Kissamos and Platanias – Local beaches discussed

Last night, 13 July, there was a public meeting of local authorities to discuss the Master Plan for the cultural and sustainable development of Kissamos and Platanias.

The Mayors of Kissamos and Platanias and other public officials, as well as local associations and citizens, were present.

The presentation concerned mostly the project of setting up various cultural routes in the area and centres of local attractions, with different themes like nature, archaeology, gorges, religious heritage, music and dancing etc.

A few of us, members of the Kissamos Beach Cleaning team and of Kissamos News, were present. We took the chance to raise with all people present a few issues that we have encountered on our regular beach cleaning activities, namely:

  • the lack of rubbish bins on most public beaches in Kissamos area
  • the dangerous presence of many vehicles repeatedly driving on the beach all the way to the shore
  • the presence of many sea turtle (a protected and endangered species) nests on the same beaches
  • the lack of warning and information signs that could help with the above points

Iris bravely stood up and spoke about those things in front of the audience.

Lydia had printed some Kissamos News posters, so we also informed the local authorities about our volunteer work to promote local events among foreign residents and tourists.

All this was in general warmly received. Stay tuned for more news!
