After much success of the voluntary group “Reading for Others” in Athens and Heraklion, it’s time to introduce the “Reading for Others” also in Chania. The non-profit organization that was created in early 2015 when its founders, Argiro Spyridaki and Theodore Tsatsos, envisioned a society where all people have equal access to good reading without discrimination. With the motto “to listen with our eyes, and read with our voice” the concept was developed as follows:
Firstly enrich steady stream audio library for the blind to audio books that our volunteers record so that people with visual difficulties to have access to more and more books and more categories readings.
Second: develop live reading actions in elderly care centers, orphanages and other children’s residential institutions, people with disabilities and motion or vision difficulties.
From the first action, a volunteer meeting was held in Athens in January 2015. To date, the group has 2,000 registered volunteers who are willing to offer any way they can contribute to the vision of Reading for Others to an egalitarian society access to literature, education and knowledge! In this context, many recordings have already been made, while live readings occur in cooperation with our network establishments on a weekly basis.
Very soon the Network gained such momentum that the spread in the rest of Greece became a reality. Chania is the second station, after Heraklion. The first meeting of Reading for Others volunteers was held at the Municipal Library of Chania, on January 8, 2016, and today the group Reading for Others in Chania has been established and dynamically initiate actions similar to those in Athens and Heraklion.
The second meeting of the volunteer group “Reading for Others” Chania will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 18:30, at the Cultural Centre of Chania in a collaboration with the Region of Crete, Chania Regional Unit. The aim is to organize activities that will take place the next time, to introduce the group of “Reading for Others” Chania and get to know the Network Founders, share with even more volunteers in our vision so that our team can grow and develop our strong presence in the city.
