Turtle nest excavations in Rethymno

Archelon excavation
Archelon excavation

Archelon, the sea turtle protection society of Greece, is conducting public sea turtle nest excavations on the beaches near Rethymno.

They are normally scheduled in the afternoon at 6pm and they are a great way to have a first-hand experience of the beautiful and endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle.

Excavations are done after the nest has been left to hatch naturally, and they mostly contain empty eggshells and the ones that didn’t make it, though it’s possible sometimes to find and release trapped baby turtles too.
