Documentary “Tanaïs: In the Embrace of the Abyss” with English subtitles – Chania 19th May

As part of the anniversary events for the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, the Region of Crete is organizing a screening of the new historical documentary “Tanaïs: In the Embrace of the Abyss”, directed by Viki Arvelaki.

A few words about the film
The documentary “Tanais: In the Embrace of the Abyss” co-produced by COSMOTE TV records parallel stories of Jews, Orthodox and Catholics, who lost their lives off the coast of Crete on June 9, 1944, after the torpedoing of the steamship Tanais, on which they were aboard as prisoners of war.
Today, eight decades later, the film revives tragic historical events through a narrative perspective related to the present need for peace. The common fate of the victims of Tanais, despite coming from different backgrounds, their passions and misfortunes, are elements that unite people over time.
The film raises questions about the detection of the causes that lead societies to escalation, the management of memory and our need to erase, preserve or “create” memories.

The documentary also presents rare documents, maps, archive photographs and manuscripts, including the 1942 notebook of the student Markos Ishakis, who was among the victims of Tanais.

The original song of the film entitled “Markos” is signed by Thanasis Papakonstantinou.
