Cultural walk: “The kilns of Margarites and the history of the village” – Margarites 14th October

14 Oct Walk history Margarites

This cultural walk is one of the events of the “Rethymnon Days” in October.

Starting time: 14th October 11.00
Starting point: Tsikalarios, at the basketball court, Margarites

Margarites is 25 km east of Rethymnon.

Signs of the end of the Byzantine Period and the domination of the Venetians. Signs of the reconciliation of the alloys and the Cretan Renaissance, as well as the struggle of the inhabitants to survive… the old houses and churches, the narrow streets and the Margaritan narratives.
Margarites today is known for its pottery art, which keeps the village alive!
Starting from the old Tsikalaria, we will walk to see the traditional ceramics workshops,  the black soil and, of course,  the modern pottery of the village.

I'm Austrian living in Tavronitis, love nature, music, good books, sunsets, the sea, travelling, socializing and more. I came to Crete as a student in the early 70s, exploring the west and southwest of the island with friends by motorbike. When you are young everything is important and, there are lots of things to do...I did. Job, family, children, travelling the world. But I never lost my love for Crete for a minute. And seven years ago I ended up in this convenient corner of Crete, not only for holidays, but to stay and haven't regretted it for a minute.
